In your main job, how many hours a week do (did) you usually work?

How do I answer this question?

Select one option about the main job you have now. If you are not currently in work, answer about the last main job you had. Do not answer about earlier jobs you have had in your career.

If you are away from work ill or self-isolating, answer about the job you had before being away from work.

Your main job is the job in which you usually work (or worked) the most hours.

If you work (or worked) equal hours in more than one job, choose the one that has (or had) the highest wage or salary.

Select the option that best matches your working hours in one week.

If you work for part of an hour:

  • round down to the nearest hour anything between 0 and 29 minutes
  • round up to the nearest hour anything between 30 and 59 minutes

Remember to include all paid and unpaid overtime you do in the week.

Do not include your unpaid breaks.

The number of hours I work can vary from week to week. How do I answer?

If you work different hours each week, try to give the average weekly hours worked over the past four weeks, including the week Monday 14 March to Sunday 20 March 2022.

I work a different number of hours than I am contracted to work. How do I answer?

Select the option that best matches the number of hours you actually work or worked.

I cannot remember the number of hours I used to work. What do I select?

If you cannot remember how many hours you used to work, estimate the number of hours as best you can.

Working ‘on call’

If you work on call, only include the hours that you actually worked. For example, if you were on call during the night, but were only called out to work for two hours, the actual working hours for that night would be two hours.

However, if you were on duty for a specified time, such as a security guard or warden, include all of the hours you were on shift.

I have more than one job. How do I answer?

Answer about the job you consider to be your main one. You should choose the job in which you usually work (or worked) the most hours.

If you work (or worked) equal hours in more than one job, choose the one that has (or had) the highest wage or salary.

I am just about to change my job. How do I answer?

If you are in the process of changing jobs, answer for the one you are doing now if it is your main job. Only answer for your new job if you have already left your previous employment.
